Yellowstone spin-off star Sam Elliott has publicly apologized for his criticism of the critically acclaimed Western film The Power of the Dog, following a barrage of criticism for remarks that many saw as homophobic.
During an appearance on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron last month, the Hollywood veteran made headlines by calling Jane Campion's Oscar-winning picture a "piece of s**t" and not a true Western.

Elliott called the Benedict Cumberbatch film a "piece of sh*t" with "allusions of homosexuality" in the podcast, and now he's apologizing not just for the words, but for the hurt they caused those involved.
Elliott appeared on stage with a few of his 1883 co-stars for Deadline's Contenders TV event on Sunday, ahead of the next awards season. When asked if he had anything to say about his remarks, he responded with his first public remarks in almost a month.

Sam Elliott acknowledges support of the gay community
People were offended by the initial comments, which implied that a Western couldn't feature a gay character.
"I wasn't very articulate about it. I didn't articulate it very well," Elliott said. "And I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that. The gay community has been incredible to me my entire career.”
During his podcast appearance, the Yellowstone spin-off star, whose extensive playing career includes turns in several Western-themed films, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Tombstone, noted that he had hailed Jane Campion as a "brilliant director."
The Power of the Dog
The Power of the Dog, based on Thomas Savage's novel of the same name, is set in 1920s Montana and explores the troubled relationship between closeted rancher Phil Burbank and his brother George, played by Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, respectively. Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee also star.
Campion won the Oscar for best director last month after receiving 12 nominations for the picture at the 2022 Academy Awards.
