The current writers' strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has left many shows in limbo, including the Showtime drama thriller Yellowjackets.

Co-creator Ashley Lyle took to social media to announce that Yellowjackets Season 3 had only just begun work in the writers' room when the strike went into effect. As a result, production on the show has been halted until a compromise is reached between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP).

The Impact of the Writers' Strike on Scripted Programming

The WGA's demand for residual payments based on viewership, which has been a contentious issue for several years, is at the heart of the current strike. While some shows have already completed scripts, the writers' strike has directly affected Yellowjackets Season 3 and other scripted programming, including late-night talk shows and Saturday Night Live.

Past WGA strikes have ranged from three months to five months, leaving audiences and production companies uncertain about when they will return to normal. With the writers' strike beginning on May 2, it's possible that it could extend throughout the summer if the WGA and AMPTP fail to reach a reasonable compromise.

Despite the show's delay, Lyle showed support for the WGA's cause and hoped that the union would get a fair deal. She also revealed that the one work session on Yellowjackets Season 3 was "creatively invigorating," hinting that the upcoming season would be worth the wait.

Implications for Yellowjackets Season 3 and Scripted Programming

As the writers' strike continues, audiences will have to be patient to see if their favorite scripted shows will be affected. The impact of streaming services on residual payments and the changing television format has resulted in fewer episodes and less sustained work for writers.

With the Yellowjackets Season 3 delay, fans will have to wait to see how the WGA and AMPTP resolve their issues and when the show will return to production.
