The first The Mummy movie came out in 1999. The script by Stephen Sommers, who also directed the film, was chosen among quite a few others. The film follows an adventurer and a librarian who accidentally awaken a cursed mummy.

Several films followed, including the 2001 The Mummy Returns, in which the main characters, now a married couple, face a new threat. Other adaptations include The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) and the 2002 spin-off The Scorpion King. A two-season animated series also came out as a result of the original movies. There was some discussion of a reboot in 2021, but the year is coming to an end with no news. So, what happened?
