Mo Dao Zu Shi Season 3: The End of an Era

Long-time fans of the original novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu will likely have mixed feelings about Mo Dao Zu Shi Season 3.

It gives fans highly anticipated scenes and ties loose threads, but, in some ways, it felt like a summary to those who have enjoyed the story in its entirety.

If you haven't read or watched Mo Dao Zu Shi, there's plenty of reason to do so.

For the uninitiated, the donghua – an anime-style Chinese animated work – follows Wei Wuxian, a morally grey character who gives in to the dark arts while young, largely out of necessity to protect what he loves.

This backlashes horribly, and following a series of tragic events, Wei Wuxian gets killed.

Years later, a young man who is treated as a madman by his family, summons Wei Wuxian's spirit and gives up his body and life to him in hopes of getting revenge against his abusers.

Reunited with a former classmate, Lan Wangji, with whom he shared a rocky relationship (and unaddressed mutual attraction), Wei Wuxian embarks on a journey to tie the loose ends that led to his demise and solve new mysteries.

The author expertly handles a non-linear story, giving sufficient hints about Wei Wuxian's past to keep things interesting but holding off enough to make us want to go on.

The donghua isn't as faithful as the manhua, but most fans consider it a decent production despite the toning down of the queer romance – a result of censorship in Chinese visual media and the omission of certain events.

Be that as it may, the second season did feel lacking compared to the first.

The episodes we did get were lovely, but there were too few of them to do the story justice.

In many ways, Season 3 is also a joy to watch, largely due to Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian being absolutely adorable around each other.

There are no known plans for Mo Dao Zu Shi Season 4. Judging from the obvious relationship upgrade, the overall tone, and the source material, Season 3 of the donghua will, unfortunately, be the last.

Compared to the phenomenal first season, the rest of the animated series is a bit rushed, and it reached a point where there was no more material to cover.

Don't despair, though, as the light novel and the manhua will always be here to offer a fuller understanding of the events and the characters.

Moreover, there's a live-action adaptation on Netflix known as The Untamed.
