Now that the official trailer for the second live-action ‘Star Wars’ show ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ has finally dropped, the rumor mill has already gone into hyperdrive as fans begin to ask many questions they hope will be answered when the show premieres on Disney+ on December 29.
The trailer looks very promising, and we're hoping to see more of that fierce Boba we saw in 'The Mandalorian'. We're also thrilled to be seeing Fennec Shand back, who also appeared in the animated 'Star Wars' show 'The Bad Batch', alongside Omega and Clone Force 99. Check out the new trailer below:
It looks like what we were expecting - a much more grungy show that takes everything we already love about 'The Mandalorian' but plunging it even deeper into the criminal underworld. When we first got that secret ending in 'Season 2', Christmas 2021 seemed like a lifetime away, but now that we've finally seen the trailer, it feels like a spice dream.
Boba Fett has long been a fan-favorite, and while it's likely Mando has replaced him as a more popular bounty hunter (he does have two seasons under his belt), there are still countless loyal Boba fans out there who will be losing their minds over the fact that they're about to see a Boba-focused show, something that has actually been teased for decades.
Boba Fett first appeared in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ in 1980 and then ‘Return of the Jedi’ in 1983 (in which he was seemingly killed by a sarlac pit). He has appeared in countless forms of ‘Star Wars’ media since, and the very recent 'Star Wars: Visions', but made his live-action return in 'The Mandalorian Season 2' (although we get a glimpse of him in 'Season 1').
And his return was a triumphant one, as he laid waste to several Stormtroopers once he slipped back into his Mandalorian armor in the episode “The Tragedy”. Here, we saw him team up with Din Djarin, as he aided the bounty hunter in retrieving Grogu from the remnants of the Galactic Empire. We got some great lines too, with the most memorable being "This isn't a spice dream."
Temuera Morrison, who also played Boba Fett’s father Jango Fett in 'Attack of the Clones', injected the character with energy needed to reinvigorate fans' interest. But this episode alone justified a ‘Boba Fett’ spin-off, and such a show was teased as the credits rolled on 'The Mandalorian', showing Boba Fett and Fennec Shand brutally claiming Jabba the Hutt's old throne.
The new trailer suggests the show will dovetail from that dethroning, showing the pair deep in the underworld of the scum and villainy of the galaxy, while Boba declares, "Jabba ruled with fear. I rule with respect." There's no doubt that the show will be a lot darker than 'The Mandalorian', especially now that we've seen just how brutal and unforgiving Boba can be when dealing with the enemy.
The show is said to run concurrently with 'The Mandalorian', while the upcoming live-action 'Ahsoka' series will do the same. Other 'Star Wars' live-action shows, however, such as 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' and 'Andor', will be set between 'Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope', putting them well out of the orbit of 'The Mandalorian' (which makes sense, of course).
But will 'The Book of Boba Fett' and 'The Mandalorian' cross over? We've already speculated as to which other characters might show up in 'The Book of Boba Fett', and there are reasons to suggest that Din Djarin will be one of them, leading to a 'crossover event' with the two shows (we've already seen Boba in 'The Mandalorian', so now it's time for Mando to return the favor).
'The Book of Boba Fett' is set to start streaming on Disney+ on December 29, this year, however, we still don't have an official release date for 'The Mandalorian Season 3'. Nevertheless, we doubt this will change the fact that both shows orbit the same pocket of time (around 5 years after 'Return of the Jedi') - especially seeing as the new show will follow on from that secret ending we got.
So it's very possible that Din Djarin will show up in 'The Book of Boba Fett', but in exactly what capacity, we don't know. All we do know is that the bounty hunter will presumably have a lot more time on his hands these days, now that Grogu appears to be out of the picture, having been rescued by Luke Skywalker in the epic 'Season 2' finale (although he'll probably return one day).
With that said, it also looks like Din will be facing off against Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff), so that she can win from him the Darksaber. While he was willing to simply hand it over to her, it can only be won through combat, otherwise becoming the ruler of Mandalore would be a lie. Whether or not the two will actually fight, though, is unknown, seeing as they are currently allies.
But perhaps this storyline will overlap with 'The Book of Boba Fett'. While the new show looks to be set mostly on Tatooine, 'Star Wars' is certainly no stranger to world-hopping, and while we're expecting Mando to visit Boba in his own show, perhaps Boba will be the one paying his armored friend a visit without having to show up in 'The Mandalorian' again. This might be the way.
There is one potential problem with a crossover event, though, as there are rumors - which even Pedro Pascal and Jon Favreau have lent credence to - about 'The Mandalorian' doing a time-jump of sorts. And as it's also rumored that Disney and Lucasfilm intend to lead the show into sequel trilogy territory, a time-jump would probably be the only way to do this (or carbonite!).
But those are just rumors. Seeing Mando appear in 'The Book of Boba Fett' is inevitable either way, even if a time-jump is on the cards (which might not even happen in 'Season 3'). There's just no way we won't get to see these two hard-as-beskar bounty hunters team up on the other side of the fence, this time in the gritty criminal underworld on Tatooine (scum and villainy indeed).
