If King Midas can turn anything he touches into gold, Ryan Reynolds can turn his movies into hits. Case in point, is the animated Free Guy movie that scored high on Rotten Tomatoes and with its audience. In its opening weekend, the movie earned $12 million at the domestic box office.
This is why it's not hard to see why fans are rooting for a sequel to happen. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie became a huge hit because of the cast who starred in the film. Aside from Reynolds, Free Guy starred Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, and Utkarsh Ambudkar. There were also several actors who made a cameo using their voices: Hugh Jackman, John Krasinski, and Channing Tatum.
Adding to the cast, Free Guy had a pretty good script. And it's exciting to see what the writers could have in mind for the sequel. But when will Free Guy 2 come out?
Here's what we know about Free Guy 2 right now.
When Is Free Guy 2 Release Date?
A release date for Free Guy 2 has not yet been announced. But the good news is that Disney has expressed its interest in making the sequel happen. This was revealed by Reynolds on his Twitter account a day after the film was released. The tweet reads:
"Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging 'Free Guy' as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!!"
In an interview in December with Collider, Levy expressed that he isn't rushing to make the sequel:
"It's still in development. I don't know if it's in the cards, but it is very much still in development. It's something that Disney and Fox want badly. I really try to not make sequels that don't deserve to be. And it's why I didn't move forward with the Real Steel sequel because I didn't feel we had a second movie that could match or top the first. I'm holding Free Guy to that same standard. We are still hearing ideas, developing ideas, expounding on ideas. But I would say that in the time that's passed since Free Guy came out, the love for that movie has become more and more clear to Ryan and I, anecdotally, on sidewalks, in the press. So we're not going to mess with a good thing unless we can make a great thing."
Potential Free Guy 2 Story: What Could It Be About?
As of this writing, the storyline for Free Guy 2 has not yet been revealed. Once the film is confirmed, we can expect more information about its plot to be released.
Potential Free Guy 2 Cast
The first film ended with most of the major characters still standing so we can expect to see them return in the sequel. There's also the possibility that new characters will be added, perhaps to make room for a potential partner for Guy (played by Ryan Reynolds).
But again, nothing official has been announced for Free Guy 2 yet.
