Mortal Kombat will follow the story of Cole Young, an orphan who doesn't know about his lineage who becomes MMA fighter living a quiet life but gets disrupted when Bi-Han/Sub-Zero was sent by the Emperor Shang-Tsung to eliminate him as he bears the mark. He met Jax, a Special Forces Major with the same mark as him, and instructed him to find Sonya Blade.

He then finds the sanctuary of Lord Raiden for people with the same mark and there, he trains with Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Kano, to prepare for the threat posed by the Outworld led by Shang-Tsung.

Mortal Kombat will be the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid, produced by James Wan, Todd Garner, and Bennett Walsh. McQuoid, when asked whether there would be a sequel for Mortal Kombat, shared with EpicStream that it is for the audience to decide if there would be one. Even stars Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson said to Epicstream that they hope for a sequel as well.

The film is given an R-Rating which means that there are scenes that are so bloody and brutal that it is inadvisable for children to see. In a recently released featurette, these fight scenes were teased and McQuoid himself said that it is "sickeningly violent."
