Having played the part of Elf-lord Elrond of Rivendell in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, is Hugo Weaving open to returning for the upcoming The Lord of the Rings Amazon series?

"No way. Absolutely no," Weaving told Variety in a recent interview, confirming that he's seemingly done with the franchise and doesn't want to return to the Middle-earth. Well, the actor could have reprised his role as Agent Smith in the fourth The Matrix movie, though, but he's sure that he'd "never" don the elf ears again.

"Matrix might have happened," Weaving added. "But Lord of the Rings, no, I would never — I'm not interested in that at all." The actor pointed out that he "loved" being in New Zealand, being with "all those great people" and feeling like "going back to a family." However, the actor admits that he thinks "everyone had more than enough of it."

Amazon's Lord of the Rings series will not be remakes of Peter Jackson's movies. Set to explore the events preceding J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will be joined by J.A. Bayona, who'll be directing the first two episodes.

There's no official airing date for The Lord of the Rings series but Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke previously said they are aiming for a 2021 release but it's uncertain whether this date will stick given the production delay the show has faced due to the coronavirus pandemic.
