Why Jedi Master Yaddle Doesn’t Speak Backwards Like Yoda

Yaddle was first introduced in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as a member of the Jedi High Council. Being the same species as Yoda, it was questionable as to why she doesn’t speak backwards like the former. Yaddle’s story may have been shown more in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, but the question remains unanswered.

Speaking with Nerdist, Tales of the Jedi executive producer Dave Filoni recalls why Jedi Master Yaddle doesn’t speak backwards like Yoda. Upon his story, he also reveals how he had also thought Bryce Dallas Howard was perfect for the role, considering how Yaddle is ‘very Bryce’ for standing up to evil.

“Does she speak backwards? I’m like, ‘No, I don’t think so. I think that’s a Yoda thing.’ Frank Oz [Yoda’s voice actor and puppeteer] told me once that Yoda speaks that way specifically in honor of his own master. That was what he had thought about it. I try to keep moving forward [with] these thoughts. And [Yaddle voice actor] Bryce [Dallas Howard] on her own made a great Yaddle.”

It would appear that while Yoda is doing it as an honor by speaking backwards like his master is very much the same as what Jedi Master Yaddle does. By speaking the tongue and syntax of the human language as it is, it shows her empathy and resolve on understanding others, as much as she is being understood by talking in the same language, which makes more sense seeing as she is always described as 'kind, patient, and wise.'

As Filoni says about Yaddle, “Yaddle has a great heart and she perseveres. And for a moment when she lifts the door, Dooku looks at her, and he sees the truth — the truth of what a powerful, good, benevolent person she is.”
