Lucas (Chris McNally) was arrested in the latest episode of When Calls the Heart after Wyman Walden accused him of a crime he did not commit. Finally, a man came forward with evidence proving Lucas' innocence. However, his sudden detention prevented him from giving Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) her intended birthday present.

Toward the end of the episode, he seemed to have finally found the right moment. Lucas took out a small red box during a quiet moment in his office. It appeared to be an ideal size for an engagement ring. Elizabeth's eyes glowed with excitement.
The phone rang before Lucas could offer his gift. Bill (Jack Wagner) was ringing to inform Lucas that Henry (Martin Cummins) had agreed to work with Dean Paul Gibson (Jerome Smith) to reopen the mine.
Lucas and Elizabeth's romantic moment was certainly ruined by this revelation. Elizabeth – and the show's viewers – were left wondering if he was truly preparing to propose to her on one knee.

Elizabeth was clearly expecting a wedding proposal.
“On my birthday, I thought you were going to propose,” an emotional Elizabeth says in a teaser for When Calls the Heart Season 9 Episode 11. “I thought maybe you’d changed your mind about this,” she adds.

Whatever occurs, it appears that the couple's uncertainty regarding the gift causes stress. According to a Hallmark description of the episode, Elizabeth and Lucas "struggle to communicate with each other." As a result, Lucas decides to leave town "to clear his head."
