Netflix has a wide selection of cooking and baking content. One of those shows, Bake Squad, has returned for a second season last January 20, 2023.

This season shows the bakers competing to provide the desserts for a number of occasions like a joint 75th birthday, a bar mitzvah, and for a celebration in honor of the founder of the Varsity Gay League. With only seven hours to plan and make the desserts, it sure is a challenge only the seasoned bakers can complete. And that is essentially what Bake Squad is.

Unlike other cooking and baking competitions on Netflix, Bake Squad doesn't eliminate the contestants (aka the professional bakers). There is also no single grand prize winner when the show concludes.

In a nutshell, Bake Squad is a hearty show that gives other people a chance to enjoy a unique cake prepared by a veteran. For the bakers, however, it simply is a way to earn bragging rights and showcase their talents.

But we know you've got burning questions about the show and the celebrants. (Also, who can forget the cake?) That's why we've decided to round up the questions and try to answer them here.

The customers featured in Bake Squad were actually Los Angeles, California locals that were scouted by theoldschool. The unscripted content studio held a casting call in February 2020 asking for locals who had an upcoming event.

Since it was the height of the pandemic, interested individuals headed to theoldschool's website to join the casting. Filming was then set for summer 2020.

At that time, the casting call did not reveal the name of the show. It was also the pilot season of Bake Squad so the customers did not know what the show was about.

In Bake Squad Season 2, theoldschool was once again partnered by Netflix to handle casting the potential customers. They also turned to the company's website to apply to be on the show in October 2021. But the event should be for February or March 2022.

With the two seasons, theoldschool casted Los Angeles locals who were above 18 years of age. Those below this age had to have a legal guardian audition for them. It's possible that in future seasons, the same criteria will be used so keep an eye out for casting calls on theoldschool's website.

It was revealed that Christina Tosi, who serves as the show's host, plays a part in picking out the clients that get featured in the show. In an interview with Monsters & Critics, Tosi shared:

“This program is about the spirit and the abilities of a baked product, but I also realized that in order to fully harness the superpowers of baked good, it would take superheroes to do it. I was aware that each and every one of these superheroes were required to tick the box containing my ingredients.”

Do Customers Pay for the Cake in Bake Squad?

There is no clip that shows the clients in Bake Squad paying the chefs. Not to mention, they don't have a price tag on the cakes they create.

In the first season, the customers weren't that well-off and were even pleased to have such a glamorous cake be created specifically for them. In the second season, however, it seems like the clients are moneyed individuals.

Even though Bake Squad is a reality competition, it doesn't use money as the grand prize for the competitors. Instead, the format of the show is on competition and bragging rights. The participants in the show gain recognition for their talents and their business, which is a great way for them to draw in more customers in the future.

There are a number of viewers who are concerned with the format of Bake Squad since there seems to be a lot of food wastage. This is because the bakers have to bake a cake as an audition entry for a potential client to choose from.

There are four professional chefs who bake massive sizes of cakes that can feed 50 to 100 people. And during the tasting portion, the potential client only takes out a small slice of the cake; which destroys the entire appearance of the cake.

After tasting each of the cakes, the client will have to pick one winner to supply the cake used for his or her upcoming event. While there's no mention of how far apart that occasion is, the end of each episode gives a short glimpse into the party and how the cake fits in.

We also see the cake in its entirety without any slices at all. This makes us think that the winning chef had to start over and recreate the entire cake from scratch just for the actual party. If this is the case though, what happens to the first cake and the three other choices? Are they simply being thrown away?

In most cooking shows, the leftover food are usually being donated to shelters and charities. There are also some who give away the food for the cast and crew to enjoy. And in either case, it's unlikely that small slices of cake are being given away.
