Are Nichirin Blades a Must for Demon Slayers?
Nichirin blades are the main weapons demon slayers use. They are forged with Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore, allowing the blades to absorb sunlight to kill demons.
The two materials can only be found in high places like Sunlight Mountain, which explains how they were able to absorb extreme amounts of sunlight.
Without the Nichirin blades, demon slayers cannot kill demons permanently.
In addition, demon slayers can request the kind of blade they wish to use.
Other than swords, demon slayers can also use cleavers or guns.
What Do the Colors of the Swords Mean?
In Demon Slayer, each sword takes a distinct color once its user draws it. This is why it is also called the color-changing katana.
The only time the sword will shift to another color is when the user reaches a certain amount of skill.

Light Purple Blade
The light purple blade represents the moon. It was used by Kokushibo when he was a demon slayer.

Lavender Blade
If light purple represents the moon, lavender represents Serpent Breathing. This explains why Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Hashira, uses this blade.
His Nichirin lades are two twisted katanas that resemble serpents, connecting his weapon to his breathing style.
Lavender Blue Blade
Many might think that Obanai and Shinobu's Nichirin blades have the same color, but the Insect Hashira's sword is actually lavender blue to represent Insect Breathing.
Amber Blade
The Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, owns the amber-colored blade.
To incorporate his weapon into his fighting style, he has two massive Nichirin cleavers that are connected by a chain.
White Blade
This sword symbolizes mist, which is why Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Pillar, has this type of blade.
Green Blade
The green blade symbolizes wind and is used by the Wind Pillar, Sanemi Shinazugawa.
His blade also has a jagged jaw-like pattern for added impact whenever he attacks.
Grey Blade
The grey blade symbolizes stone, which is why it ended up with Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Pillar. It also reflects Gyomei's strong personality.
His weapon does not resemble the traditional Nichirin blade as well, as he transformed it into a hand-ax with a spiked flail.
Pink Blade (Light and Dark)
The dark pink-colored blade is for Mitsuri Kanroji, who uses the Breath of Love style. The pink color symbolizes love, which makes it perfect for the Love Pillar.
Quick fun fact: The Breath of Love style was created by Mitsuri, so she is the only demon slayer who can use it. She based the breathing technique on her agile and flexible body.
On the other hand, the light pink blade was used by Kanao Tsuyuri and Kanae Kocho as both of them use the Breath of Flower style.
Indigo-Grey Blade
The indigo-grey blade gives off a beastly vibe that easily connects it to its user, Inosuke Hashibira. Specifically, he uses two indigo-grey blades.
Like Mitsuri, Inosuke developed his own breathing style, the Breath of Beast.
Yellow Blade
Meanwhile, the yellow blade, which represents thunder, is owned by Zenitsu Agatsuma.
The standard-sized sword has a lightning bolt design on the blade.
Blue Blade
The blue sword represents water, and it belongs to Giyu Tomioka. He uses the Breath of Water style, which is also seen in his fluid movements.
Red Blade
Another familiar sword is the red blade that Kyojuro Rengoku owns. It symbolizes flame and has a unique pattern thanks to its flame design.
Black Blade
Lastly, the black blade is yielded by no other than Tanjiro Kamado.
It is a rare blade that symbolizes the sun, which is unsurprising as Tanjiro is a Sun Breather.
