It has been a decade since the release of TRON: Legacy and Disney is set to come up with a third TRON movie this time starring Jared Leto. While we don't have any official look on the follow-up yet, the VFX artists of Corridor Crew have decided to give the original TRON a revisit and update their iconic Lightcycle scene with modern VFX.

The challenge was basically to recreate the original lightscycle scene (which was painstakingly made at the time) with modern visual effects. And while they did manage to pull off a faithful remake, they decided to add one more flourish in where modern VFX are applied like dynamic lighting, reflections, and textures.

The bit starts at 14:03:

I have to say, the effect looks amazing. While the original movie does appear dated now, it was still a technical marvel at the time it was made and it was even nominated for the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects. You'd think it would get a VFX nomination at the Oscars, but TRON only got nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Sound.

We don't know when the third TRON movie will come out, and at this point, I think 2023 is a realistic guess. Then again, with the movie having spent so long in development, maybe a 2022 release is possible.

You can also catch Jared Leto in Sony's Morbius which comes out March 18, 2021.
