UPDATE: Sonic the Hedgehog Only Cost $5 Million to Redesign

News had been going around recently that Paramount had spent close to $35 million to fix Sonic the Hedgehog after the scathing reactions from the first trailer. As it turns out, it didn't even cost half that amount at all.

As per IndieWire, a source close to the production has confirmed that Paramount had spent only $5 million to redesign Sonic for the film. As it turns out, the VFX was far from completed when the first trailer came out, so replacing Sonic in the film didn't turn out as expensive as some might think.

If you think about it, the Sonic team was lucky they didn't have to change most of the film. To compare, the Cats movie also had a negative reaction when the first trailer aired, but for now it looks like there's no more time to "fix" anything on the VFX side of things. I guess the filmmakers will just have to double down on their anthropomorphic cat people.

If anything, Sonic the Hedgehog still had to undergo a major delay. Originally the film was set to come out this November, but the redesign ended up delaying the movie by three months. Hopefully that's enough time for the artists to make a redesign and apply it to the rest of the film. The good news is, everyone is loving the look of this new Sonic, and everyone can't wait to see him in action by the time February comes along.

Catch Sonic the Hedgehog when it hits theaters Feb. 14, 2020.
