Tomb Raider Sequel Finds Director

Though the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander was deemed forgettable by a lot of people, the film apparently made enough money to get MGM to make a sequel. What's news is, the movie has supposedly found its new director.

According to Deadline, Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Free Fire) has been hired to direct Lara Croft's next adventure. As for now, Wheatley is currently working on his next film Rebecca; we have no update yet on when he's officially starting production for Tomb Raider, but the film is aiming for an early 2021 release date.

Besides Vikander coming back, it looks like MGM wants a new team behind this Tomb Raider sequel. Whatley is actually bringing along Amy Jump to write the script for Tomb Raider; Jump has also written the script for Wheatley's Free Fire.

Just in case you're curious, here's the trailer:

With the first movie taking elements from Square Enix's rebooted Tomb Raider game, we should probably expect the same with the sequel. Then again, with the first movie underperforming, it's likely the sequel won't borrow anything from Rise of the Tomb Raider. Personally, I would prefer that these films just focus on making their own story instead of adapting stories from the games and suffering comparisons from the fans.

Of course, that's just my opinion. Hollywood should be smart enough by now to know they're doing something wrong when it comes to these video game movie adaptations. Otherwise, they wouldn't be doing so remake after remake.

The Tomb Raider sequel is set to come out March 19, 2021.
