The Witcher Remake in Unreal Engine 5 Announced by CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt, the developer of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 games, has announced that it will remake The Witcher in Unreal Engine 5, alongside developer Fool's Theory.

The remake of the first The Witcher game is one of the five new games CD Projekt Red announced earlier this month and previously went by the codename Canis Majoris. According to the company, this will be a true remake that will be "rebuilt from the ground up" in Unreal Engine 5.

As part of CDPR's announcement, the company said: "We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details."

The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger,” said Adam Badowski, Head of Studio, CD Projekt Red in a statement.

“Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.”

The Witcher remake will be the first time CDPR will work with a third-party developer. Fool's Theory is also developing a project codenamed Vitriol, a new IP created in collaboration with 11-Bit Studios (This War of Mine, Frostpunk).

The original The Witcher game was released in 2007, and it was the CD Projekt Red's debut game. The remake was announced today as part of the 15th anniversary of the game's original release.
