Dean Winchester's surprise appearance in The Winchesters Season 1 will have a significant impact.

When the show returned after its winter break, Episode 8 showed that the mysterious man who sent John a letter from his long-lost father was actually Supernatural's Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), their grown-up son from the future, as John noticed him in the background of a photograph.

Robbie Thompson Teases Dean Winchester's Cameo in The Winchesters Season 1

EW spoke with showrunner Robbie Thompson on how The Winchesters Season 1 is progressing. They discussed Dean's major cameo, and Thompson stated that Dean will be a "huge, huge part of the remainder" of the season.

“I think we refer to him a lot as the Mystery Man, and he's a huge drive for the remainder of the season,” the showrunner said.

“They obviously know that this person is someone who's been on the Akrida's radar, but they don't know who he is. We obviously do [Laughs].”

He even made light of the possibility that Ackles would return in the flesh.

He added: “But the drive to find this handsome, slightly out-of-focus man is a huge, huge part of the remainder of it. And we'll see more glimpses as we go along.”

Why Dean and Not Sam?

There is probably a reason why Dean but not Sam (Jared Padalecki) appears on The Winchesters Season 1. Even though Dean passed away in the Supernatural series finale, it's possible that he time-travelled just before passing away or that he's still making mysterious trips into his parents' past as a spirit.

Sam, on the other hand, had a very different outcome. He lived, appeared to stop hunting monsters, and focused on raising his son, whom he named Dean. Sam wouldn't be present if one of those explanations is the reason Dean shows up in The Winchesters because it is not the course his life has taken in the present.

Padalecki is also working on The CW's Western revival series Walker, which keeps him busy and may have precluded him from joining the set of The Winchesters even if he was willing.
