The CW made numerous attempts at spinoffs in response to Supernatural's overall success, but the majority of the projects never took off. With the release of The Winchesters, which Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel executive produced, everything changed.

As the spinoff project nears its premiere, Ackles shared his dismay at one failed Supernatural spinoff.

Wayward Sisters Should've Took Off, Jensen Ackles Says

Jensen Ackles discussed the multiple attempts at Supernatural spinoffs at The Winchesters' New York Comic-Con panel (via Screen Rant). The star/producer voiced disappointment with one aborted spinoff, Wayward Sisters, saying it had the potential for a complete series.

"We had Wayward Sisters," Ackles commented. "I thought that should have really gotten a shot."

Wayward Sisters, the unsuccessful spinoff Ackles is referring to, was being developed by Andrew Dabb and Robert Berens and was intended to center on Kim Rhodes' Sheriff Jody Mills as well as perhaps include Kathryn Newton's Claire Novak and Yadira Guevara-Kaia. Prip's However, it was never picked up.

In addition to Wayward Sisters, attempts were made to create a Supernatural: Bloodlines spinoff with a Chicago setting, a prequel series with an Old West setting focusing on Samuel Colt, which was dropped after the main show's Season 9, and a brief anime adaptation.

Fans of Supernatural may at least look forward to Ackles' involvement in The Winchesters since he not only acts as executive producer but also narrates the spinoff series, despite his disappointment that Wayward Sisters would not be continuing forward.

The Winchesters Release Date

The new show, created by Supernatural alum Robbie Thompson, serves as an origin story for John Winchester and Mary Campbell, the couple who gave birth to the mainline show's beloved monster-hunting brothers, as they cross paths and fall in love with one another while searching for their missing fathers and falling into the monster-hunting business.

Furthermore, with Ackles hinting at a possible Supernatural revival in the future and preparing to rejoin with on-screen father Jeffrey Dean Morgan for The Boys Season 4, fans of the show have a lot to look forward to with the franchise.

Meanwhile, The Winchesters, which premieres on The CW on Oct. 11, is a must-see.
