Jeffrey Dean Morgan opened up about his decision to return to The Walking Dead universe with the recently renamed The Walking Dead: Dead City. After 12 years on the air, TWD will come to an end this year, but Negan (Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) will return to start a new adventure.

The two will be going northeast and entering the island of Manhattan. So, how these two end up in New York and what awaits them in the Big Apple remains to be seen in The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Reveals Why He Decided to Join The Walking Dead: Dead City.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Morgan revealed the reason behind his decision to stay in the world of The Walking Dead.

The 56-year-old joined the series in the season six finale as a guest star. Come the seventh season, he started to be a series regular, famously known as the bat-swinging villain.

At the time, Morgan had no plans to reprise his role when the show ended.

"If you had told me that a year ago that I would be doing it, I would've said, 'There's no way. I'm going to end this and walk away,'" he said. "The new adventure awaits doing something else."

But, The Walking Dead: Dead City's story seemed to have changed his mind.

"I think that The Walking Dead ending and walking away from it would've been a noble thing for us all to do," he continued. "But the story was so good and so worth telling that it simply came down to, I couldn't say no. And I felt invigorated and wanted to continue it."

By the looks of it, he might even have plans to do more.

Taking Negan, Maggie to New Territories

Morgan has been playing the role of Negan for over half a decade.

Though it's more than enough time to play a villainous role, his decision to stay indicates that something big is about to happen to his character.

ScreenRant noted The Walking Dead: Dead City will take Negan into "exciting new territory" that the actor himself can't refuse.

Now that Negan has found redemption after everything he has done. Alternatively, Maggie has eventually accepted and tries to move on from the death of her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun).

By the looks of it, the upcoming spinoff will explore these two's characters in a very challenging way.
