The TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman was a huge success. However, the show still faced criticism, and this major character development is seen to make The Sandman Season 2 much better.

The Sandman Season 1 adapts the first two volumes of Gaiman’s DC comics of the same name. It features Dream (Tom Sturridge) and his six siblings, Despair (Donna Preston), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Death (Kirby), Destruction, Delirium, and Destiny, and one of them will see a major change in The Sandman Season 2.

The Criticism The Sandman Season 1 Faced

Not all Dream’s siblings are seen in the series’ first season, though Desire and Despair are heavily featured.

Compared to the comic version, Despair appears much more in the show with her twin brother, Desire.

These two are as powerful as their other siblings, but Despair’s character image has faced criticism, and fans want it to be changed in The Sandman Season 2, per Screen Rant.

In the first season, Despair is depicted as a plus-sized woman and the only full-figured representation on the show. A critique on Tumblr noticed that the character was also embodied as “frumpy, depressed,” and unloved.

And as the only plus-sized character, her characteristics are said to be “degrading.”

Sure, she is one of the most powerful Endless, but her traits differ from this characterization, making her somehow below her kind. It’s even emphasized by her lack of character development.

Neil Gaiman Promises to Address Criticism in The Sandman Season 2

Thankfully, Gaiman addressed the issue by making his own post, acknowledging the first season’s mistake in Despair’s representation and admitting they “missed what we were aiming for.”

Hence, he hoped that the next time fans see Despair, they would no longer think of her as “frumpy, depressed, and unloved.”

This just means that a major character development may happen to her in The Sandman Season 2.

There may also be more and better plus-sized representation in the show to oppose this kind of criticism.

The Sandman Season 2 Update

Netflix has officially announced the coming of The Sandman Season 2. Now, Gaiman gives an update about the show’s new season.

In a response on Tumblr, the series creator revealed they’re now amid casting for the first episode while production designers are working on the set designs.
