Currently, Joe and Anthony Russo are gearing up for the release of The Gray Man on Netflix and surprisingly enough, the anticipated film starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans is actually connected to the directing duo's first MCU film.

Turns out, The Gray Man has long been on the list of non-MCU projects they've been working on but being the lead directors of the Avengers franchise prevented them from prioritizing the Netflix film. It was a huge blessing in disguise though as working on Captain America: The Winter Soldier made them realize that Chris Evans was the right fit for the project's villain role.

Speaking with ComicBook, the Russo Brothers explained the process that went to the creation of The Gray Man. Joe said: "We read it years ago while we were making Winter Soldier, and we actually I did the first adaptation of it in between takes while we were directing Winter Soldier as a potential movie to direct after we were done with it. But then we got asked to do Civil War and then Avengers, so we put this on the shelf for a few years."

Meanwhile, Evans, who has long been rumored for a major return to the Marvel film franchise has previously stated his hesitance in a potential comeback. According to the "former" Captain America actor, he doesn't feel the need to return as the Star-Spangled Avenger especially now that Anthony Mackie has taken on the mantle.

The Gray Man hits Netflix on July 15, 2022.
