NetherRealm is currently sitting on good reviews for Mortal Kombat 11, and now news has dropped on an upcoming movie reboot for the franchise. As it turns out, the new MK movie will release sometime next year.

According to Variety, Mortal Kombat the movie will release on March 05, 2021 and will be directed by Simon McQuoid; this will be his first feature film. It's also worth noting that Aquaman director James Wan is attached as a producer for the movie; appropriate considering he basically reinvented the horror/gore genre with the Saw franchise—I wouldn't expect any less from something like Mortal Kombat.

The way that video game movies always come out, I'm not really that hyped for a full-on Mortal Kombat movie. I mean, when you look at Hollywood's recent track record with Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed, and Warcraft, there's still not a great way to adapt any video game into a film without removing a good chunk of the story.

I guess Detective Pikachu worked, but it's probably because they chose to have their own self-contained plot which only takes place in the same universe. What are the odds they can pull off the same thing with MK?

Mortal Kombat the movie is set to come out March 5, 2021, but you can now play Mortal Kombat 11 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
