The ending moments of The Mandalorian season 2 brought a lot of surprises and excitement for fans. Series creator Jon Favreau has made an impact once again.

The first two seasons of the series are mostly disconnected from the other main movies in the Star Wars universe, as well as the Skywalker saga but the final episode of season 2 made it possible to interconnect the series to the main universe by bringing in the young Luke Skywalker, face-to-face with Grogu and Mando (Pedro Pascal).

There was quite a disheartening farewell when Luke takes Grogu away from Mando, to get the Jedi ways of training. Meanwhile, Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) is still in Mando's custody.

Mando and Bo-Katan had some tension over the Darksaber, wherein they need to win it by combat, and it also makes the owner the leader of the Mandalorians. Not only that but The Mandalorian season 2's end credit revealed that Boba Fett will be getting his own Star Wars spin-off.

All these events lead up to an exciting The Mandalorian season 3.

The Mandalorian season 3 will return slightly later than normal as Disney confirmed that it will be released on December 2021.

It will be quite a long wait for fans but the good news is that there will no shortage of Star Wars content as the recent Disney Investor Day revealed several other projects on the line.

Between the events that happened in season 1 and season 2, The Mandalorian would be picking up with Mando as he tries to return Grogu to his people. However, this ending is not clear on Mando's next step.

As season 2 ended, fans saw Grogu left to train with Skywalker, presumably, Mando has completed his mission.

Some speculations believe that Boba Fett will take center stage due to the end credits where The Book of Boba Fett was teased at the end of the final episode. It was even slated for December 2021.

The Mandalorian season 3 will be released at the same time, which led to the speculations that Boba Fett may be the focus for the third season. However, a spin-off series was just announced for Boba Fett which means season 3 will not actually focus on Boba Fett.

Another possibility is that Luke and Grogu will part ways, which is why Mando and The Child will meet once again. There are speculations on how Luke and Grogu will part ways. One theory suggests that Grogu is being set up as a villain. Just like how the audience formed a connection with Anakin Skywalker, only to become Darth Vader.

There are some theories that Grogu might be set up that way as the audience is already forming a bond with him, even giving him the nickname Baby Yoda.

Luke may sense the dark force within Grogu and try to banish him or even kill him, in which Mando will come and stop him. Mando may try to save Grogu from Luke, which can be a good way to set up season 3.

However, all of these are just theories and speculations for the plot of season 3. There would likely be more information to come in 2021.

That's only a speculation. What's left from season 2 is the heroes hanging out on the Imperial destroyer's deck, with Moff Gideon, a high profile target in their custody.

There can be more conflicts regarding Moff Gideon which can be taken as part of season 3.

Aside from that, there is some brewing tension between Mando and Bo-Katan, who wants the Darksaber, even when Mando won it from Moff Gideon. This tension can become a plot point for season 3 going forward.

Moff Gideon actor Esposito stated that the second season has the depth that will be explored in season 3. The actor said, "We're living in a universe that is huge and there's so much to explore, so I think this show is going to lay the groundwork for the depth and breath that's gonna come in Season Three and Season Four, where you're really gonna start to get answers."

The Mandalorian season 3 has begun its production in April 2020. The production started right as the COVID-19 has hit the United States. The pre-productions started last spring.

Series creator Jon Favreau has reportedly been "writing season 3 for a while" with a particular direction in mind. Lucasfilm vice president and executive director Doug Chiang along with the art department have started developing the art concepts for the new season.

Jon Favreau stated that his experience working as the inaugural director of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after directing Iron Man and Iron Man 2 has helped his outlook for the future of The Mandalorian.

The filmmaker stated, "I learned a lot from my experience over at Marvel, where it was very organic, how it would evolve. You're paying attention to a larger story arcs and characters that could come together, but also smaller stories of individual characters that could go off [on their own thing].

The key here is to keep maintaining the quality and never scaling to the point that we're losing sight of what's important to us and what people like about the show."

Due to the pandemic, many productions have been halted or paused. Series executive producer and showrunner Favreau stated that The Mandolorian season 3 production is on schedule to begin its production, before 2020 ends.

Favreau is also confident that they can film the show even during the pandemic. The director stated, "We're in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks. We also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we're a show that's probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting."

Favreau also added that the show may take a similar approach to Game of Thrones where they may add more characters to a larger story.

He said that the new season will introduce the series to a larger story in the world where the stories will become less isolated, with each episode having its own flavor.

He hopes to bring more scope to the show. Favreau said, "As we introduce other characters, there are opportunities to follow different storylines. The world was really captivated by ‘Game of Thrones' and how that evolved as the characters followed different storylines — that's very appealing to me as an audience member."

Dave Filoni who worked on Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars stated something similar.

Filoni said, "Everything gets bigger, the stakes get higher, but also the personal story between the Child and The Mandalorian develops in a way I think people will enjoy."

Reportedly, The Mandalorian season 3 might begin its production under the name of Buccaneer. There are rumors suggesting that Chicago Med actress Sophie Thatcher might also join the show's third season.

However, it is unclear whether Thatcher will join The Mandalorian or a spin-off series. A stuntman for the series also confirmed that Pedro Pascal, who plays Mando, will be back in the series as well.

The Mandalorian season 1 and season 2 are available for streaming on Disney+.
