The Lord of the Rings Star Expresses Interest Joining New Middle-Earth Movies

As it stands, Warner Bros. is not only investing in expanding the Wizarding World of the Harry Potter franchise, but even in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings films, as well, under WBD. The original filmmakers such as Peter Jackson will be reportedly involved in making the new Middle-Earth movies. Though it is still unclear on what the new movies will feature, Gollum actor Andy Serkis is interested in returning to the franchise.

“Look, [producers] Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens are sort of a second family that I have become a part of and have gone on to make so many films with,” Serkis told BroBible’s Post-Credit Podcast:

“And — let me tell you — they are the best and most incredible people to work with. I think that there are so many other potential Middle-Earth projects which could come about, and if they’re doing them, I would, of course, jump at the chance to have that relationship rekindled … Middle-earth has never left me.”

It is worth noting that while Jackson’s involvement in the production of the new The Lord of the Rings films, Serkis previously admitted that he would only ever come back to the franchise as long as the original filmmakers were there, too. In this case, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are also included in the creation, thus solidifying Serkis’ willingness to return.

Despite having years passed from his role as Gollum in the franchise and after joining numerous impressive franchises, with the most notable being Star Wars, seeing Serkis’ positive reaction to the new Lord of the Rings films is sure to bring back fans coming to watch his performance again.

The revival of the franchise was successful through Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, so, the new The Lord of the Rings movies could potentially do the same with the right filmmakers. Hopefully, the other original cast members could grab the opportunity and reprise their own respective roles once the project comes to fruition.

For now, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is reportedly expected to be released in 2024.
