The Hunger Games prequel titled, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is finally in development under Lionsgate. Following three more installments after the first film debuted in 2012, the franchise grossed a total of $2.97 billion worldwide. With that being said, it's not surprising that Lionsgate has decided to continue the franchise with a prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, also based on Collin’s novel that centers on young Panem's villainous president, Coriolanus Snow. The prequel is still under development, and Lionsgate has recently revealed its first synopsis.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes official synopsis is below:

Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.

Suzzane Collins will be the executive producer, while Francis Lawrence, the director behind The Hunger Games franchise will be back to helm the spinoff. More recently, Tom Blyth was officially cast as Coriolanus Snow and definitely has big shoes to fill considering how Donald Sutherland has remarkably portrayed an unsettling interpretation of the character. Hopefully, with the upcoming prequel’s unveiled synopsis, it looks like The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will maintain The Hunger Games’ dark theme.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is pushing a November 17, 2023 release date.
