The Elder Scrolls: Blades For Nintendo Switch Still Requires Online Connection

The Elder Scrolls: Blades is one of Bethesda's bigger mobile games so the fact that it's coming to a money-making machine like the Nintendo Switch is far from surprising. It was announced earlier this year but a release date for the free-to-play game has yet to be revealed. As we wait for more details, an interview with Nintendo Everything has revealed some interesting and sad details about the upcoming mobile port.

Craig Lafferty and Matt Carofano, the project lead and art director on Blades respectively, said that Bethesda's Elder Scrolls: Blades Switch port would still need an online connection for play. This is pretty disappointing since the Switch doesn't have immediate data to use for the internet like a cellphone, meaning that Switch-Blades, as the fans have affectionately called the port, can't be played on the bus or train.

"Yes. It will, but having an offline mode is something we definitely hear from a lot of people for the game in general, so that's something we always constantly look at – like how would we do it. We want to make sure – the online game, we're adding PvP in the fall, we want to make sure cheating isn't an issue. So it's like, how do we do an online mode that makes sense? Right now we're requiring an internet connection, but in the future it's something we may add if we can have a good solution for it."

At the least, we can respect the fact that they are aware of the requests for an offline mode. When you consider how a free-to-play game like Super Kirby Clash on Nintendo Switch can be played offline, this makes Blades look lesser in comparison. Kirby Clash also has a limit to how much microtransactions can be used so there's something Bethesda can learn from Nintendo.

No release date for The Elder Scrolls: Blades on Nintendo Switch has been announced. The game is currently available on iOS and Android.
