Hulu has released a new trailer for its upcoming series, The Dropout, starring Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of Theranos.

The Dropout is based on Rebecca Jarvis's and ABC Audio's 2019 podcast of the same name. Originally, Kate McKinnon was slated to star, but she backed out without explanation, and Amanda Seyfried took her place.

The show also stars Naveen Andrews, William H. Macy, Lauren Metcalf, Elizabeth Marvel, Stephen Fry, and Sam Waterston, in addition to Seyfried, who delivers a superb impression of Holmes' infamous exaggerated lower-pitched voice.

The Dropout Trailer

Now, a new trailer for The Dropout focuses on Seyfried's portrayal of Holmes. The trailer opens with Holmes implementing her excessively ambitious plan to develop new technology to aid in blood testing.

The teaser follows the now-familiar arc of Holmes' narrative, which began with her dropping out of Stanford to start what would later become Theranos and culminated in the disgraced inventor being found guilty of scamming Theranos' investors.

Liz Heldens, Liz Hannah, Katherine Pope, Rebecca Jarvis, Victoria Thompson, and Taylor Dunn will serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether. Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) directed numerous episodes and also acts as an executive producer alongside Jordana Mollick, his Semi-Formal Productions producing partner.

The Dropout Release Date

It's too early to say what, if any, long-term impact Holmes' guilty verdict will have in the larger startup tech industry, where truth-bending hustles are often regarded just a normal part of the game. The trailer for The Dropout, however, shows that Hollywood still has a strong hunger for turning these kinds of stories into polished, swiftly produced entertainment — even when the complete story has yet to play out in the real world.

The Dropout isn't the only upcoming show about tech CEOs who have fallen out of favor. WeCrashed on Apple TV Plus explores the downfall of WeWork, while Super Pumped on Showtime follows former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. If tech CEOs aren't your thing, Netflix's Inventing Anna will center on a fake socialite who deceived New York's rich elite.

The Dropout drops on Hulu on March 3.
