The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is undergoing some serious changes via the new comic book series The Last Ronin which explores a future world where three of the original turtles don't exist anymore. The last surviving turtle is now out to fight the forces of evil and survive a dark, technologically-advanced future in a storyline quite similar to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
A lot of hype surrounds the new comic book series as it marks the reunion of co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird who recently settled their differences after a two-decade rift. Not only that, but fans have been guessing which among Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael since the announcement of the new title. Now, the mystery has been laid to rest as IDW publishing just revealed which turtle has taken on the mantle of The Last Ronin.
In the first issue of the comic series, the turtle in question steps foot in Manhattan Island and he's out to seek revenge on Shredder's grandson Oroku Hiroto who killed Master Splinter and the remaining Ninja Turtles. He ultimately fails his mission and ends up being rescued by a kid named Jones in a sewer. Much to his surprise, he wakes up seeing April O'Neill watching over him and she's revealed to still be alive following all the mayhem.
Of course, being a close ally of the TMNT all these years, April instantly recognizes The Last Ronin and he's none other than Michaelangelo. The issue ends with a good old cliffhanger to keep fans excited for the next issue.
The new TMNT comic book shows a lot of promise and although it's only expected to run for five issues, it's already creating a lot of buzz in the comic book community and that could spell great things for its future.
The Last Ronin is now out in stores.
