1883 Season 2: Did Taylor Sheridan Just Say IT’S OVER for the Yellowstone Prequel?

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is skeptical of 1883 Season 2 plans, believing the first season's story was "closed-ended."

1883 stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, as well as Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen, and James Landry Hébert. In December, the Yellowstone prequel series premiered on Paramount+ to mostly excellent reviews, thanks to the cast's performances, particularly Elliott's, as well as the suspense and world-building of Sheridan's Western franchise.

1883 was also a ratings success for the streaming site, resulting in a Season 2 renewal before the end of the first season, but that future may not be as certain as previously claimed.

Will There be an 1883 Season 2?

Sheridan revealed his thoughts about an 1883 Season 2 during an interview with Deadline to discuss the recently aired finale.

Despite an apparent renewal at last month's ViacomCBS investor event, the Oscar-nominated writer expressed doubt about future plans, stating that the Season 1 story was "closed-ended."

"I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey. I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily after, or didn’t,” Sheridan told the publication.

“For me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then."

Should We Expect More 1883 Episodes?

Despite Sheridan's reservations about 1883 Season 2, Variety has confirmed in a different story that Paramount+ is still creating additional episodes of the series, but the artistic direction is "still being determined."

Given the Yellowstone creator's feelings about the Season 1 ending, it's understandable that the streamer is still figuring out how to best move forward with the series, particularly given his extensive involvement in which he wrote all 10 episodes and directed the pilot.

Furthermore, with a number of main characters in the program dying in the 1883 finale, a new path will take some time to emerge.

And yet, even if Sheridan does not return to write the entire season, his ongoing efforts in expanding the Yellowstone world with the impending spinoffs 1932 and 6666, as well as Season 5 of the blockbuster series, will at least keep the fan-favorite Western drama on track.
