Playing the fan-favorites Hopper and Joyce, fans have high hopes that these two will have a happy ending in Stranger Things Season 5. But Matt and Ross Duffer shot down what they called a "terrible" idea that David Harbour and Winona Ryder pitched for their characters.

During his appearance at Canada's Calgary Expo convention for Stranger Things Season 5, Harbour revealed a "scandalous theory" about Hopper and Joyce's backstory he worked out with Ryder.

The So-Called 'Terrible' Theory About Hopper and Joyce

The Violent Night actor revealed he pitched the idea of Joyce's eldest son, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), being Hopper's illegitimate lovechild to the Duffer brothers.

However, the show's creators both shot it down.

"I love this theory, Wynona and I both love this theory," he said via ComicBook.

"It's something about how Hopper went to Vietnam, and we figured out a timeline where Lonnie couldn't have been Jonathan's father," he continued. "They broke up, Lonnie was in the picture for a while, and I guess they dropped out in-between one of Hopper's tours in Vietnam."

Harbour added that Hopper returned and brought a pie to Joyce's home, ending up conceiving Jonathan.

"Then she got back together with Lonnie and never told him," he stated. "And so the secret is that Jonathan is Hopper's kid, and that's why in the first season, there's a lot of male bonding stuff between me and Jonathan."

However, when he finally brought it up to Matt and Ross, they said, "No, that's terrible."

A Potential Happy Ending for Hopper and Joyce

Harbour also teased that Hopper and Joyce might have a happy ending in Stranger Things Season 5.

Speaking at Middle East Film & Comic-Con, the 48-year-old told the crowd that Joyce and Hopper "kind of deserve each other."

From there, he hinted that these two characters might take their relationship to the next level.

"I mean, I think it will be a really fun season for the two of them based on what's gone before," he explained via The Direct.

"The Duffers have a good way of paying off a lot of things that you want them to pay off," he continued. "They usually stick the landing with a lot of things. So, I think they will with this relationship as well."
