Star Trek Producer Teases Plans for Character-Focused Limited Series

As Paramount+ is airing multiple Star Trek shows at the moment, there have also been questions about whether they will produce more projects in the franchise and whether some of the fan-favorite characters will also get their own spinoff show. So far, the future remains mum as they haven't announced any new shows that have been given a green light.

Now, it looks like we may be seeing more Star Trek in a different format as franchise producer Alex Kurtzman revealed in an interview with SFX Magazine (via TrekMovie) that they are considering the idea of doing character-focused limited series in the future.

"By the way, even individual characters – I think we could absolutely continue to tell stories about individual characters that are set up on the show in other contexts," he said.

"That’s the beauty of having a universe now is that, in a perfect world, we’re not just doing seasons of television, we’re doing event series [mini-series], we’re doing single events that could be two, three hours long [TV movies]. I think that we are now at a place where that’s really possible."

Considering that the idea of doing limited series has been a success for other franchises such as the MCU and Star Wars, it's not surprising to hear that Star Trek might do a similar path in the future and it's their opportunity to experiment with different kinds of storytelling besides what they're doing at the moment.

At the moment, the third season of Star Trek: Picard felt like a limited series since it is a full reunion of The Next Generation and we're witnessing the character get their long-deserved send-off and one last adventure within a span of just 10 episodes.

For now, let's just wait and see whether they will eventually go with the plan of doing limited series that are more character-focused and it would be interesting to see which characters will we see receive the treatment.
