Joseph Kosinski directs Spiderhead. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the movie's screenplay, which was based on the short sci-fi novel by George Saunders.

Spiderhead was shot in Queensland, Australia, which brought amazing revenue to the country, and the movie also brought employment for many of the locals. In an interview with Screen Queensland, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk tells about her appreciation for the movie:

Escape from Spiderhead will give a great boost to the local economy. We’re working hard to secure productions like this for the Gold Coast because we know they create local jobs and pump cash into local businesses…. Because we’ve managed the health here in Queensland, we can now capitalize on that demand and focus on rebuilding our economy.

Spiderhead is based on the short sci-fi novel by George Saunders. The movie shows a world where inmates have the chance to experience living a “free” life by participating in an experimental drug procedure as test subjects in the Spiderhead facility. Inside Spiderhead, there are no restrictions, no cells, and nothing that resembles life being inside a jail. The experiment was led by Steve Abnesti, a pharmaceutical genius who vision to make the world a better place through an emotion-altering drug.

The test subjects receive a surgically attached device that releases a drug into their body in the experiment. Abnesti controls when and how much of the drug is injected into the inmates' bodies during observations. The drug changes how the inmates think, how feel, and how they act, and Abnesti takes note of these observations.

Abnesti may think that he is doing noble work, but darker intentions soon surface. One of the inmates named Jeff meets another inmate called Rachel, and together, they rebel against Abnesti and his experiments.

The movie ended with events that left a possibility for a sequel, though Spiderhead 2 is still not in the works.
