Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently being hailed by fans for yet again another creative approach to telling Miles Morales' multiversal adventure and groundbreaking animation that surpassed the accomplishments that were done in the first film.
There is no doubt that the key creatives behind the film did a great job of making it and it also shows that Sony can still successfully produce Spider-Man films even without any direct involvement of Marvel Studios.
However, given the film's huge scope and minimal references to the MCU, some fans are wondering whether Marvel Studios was actually involved in the making of the film in some capacity and now we have the answer.
Is Kevin Feige Involved in the Making of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller addressed whether Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was involved in the making of the film, particularly in the dialogue that referenced the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Miller revealed that Feige has no involvement at all regarding the particular dialogue or the other parts of the film and the legal team did all the work to make the MCU reference possible.
"None. We did it. It’s been our policy to do what we think is interesting and best and let the lawyers and business affairs people figure out what’s possible, and so far we’ve been able to do the things that we think are good," he said.
However, Lord also described their collaboration with Marvel Studios as "fruitful" and pointed out that Feige is also a fan of the first film and roots for the animated trilogy to be successful.
"Marvel has given us a lot of rope. It’s been a very fruitful collaboration. But it’s not like there’s some shadowy board of figures that you have to run things by," he added.
"I think Kevin’s a big admirer of the first movie and just believes like a rising tide lifts all boats. Like, 'These movies are cool, and it makes those movies cool. And we make each other cool."
Miller added by iterating that the film was "done out of love" and the collaboration between the studios has been "pleasant" all around.
He said, "And it’s all done out of love. If it were somehow mean-spirited or coming from a place of anything other than admiration and enjoyment, I think it might be a thing. But as it is, it’s just been a very pleasant collaboration."
It is great to hear that the two studios have a great relationship regarding this particular Spider-Man project that is definitely beneficial to both sides creatively.
However, it also poses a question of whether their collaboration will expand even further in the third film and perhaps Feige will have some consultation about whether it can be connected to the events of the MCU. We should be hearing about it sometime soon.
