Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, have been supporting Queen Elizabeth with her royal duties and engagements. In fact, the couple traveled to Scotland with Her Majesty this week to mark the beginning of Holyrood Week. Other than this, the couple has also been attending more royal outings on behalf of the monarch, especially now that she could no longer do as much because of her mobility issues.

But several years ago, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was forced to quit her royal duties after she became involved in a PR scandal. She was reportedly recorded bragging about her royal connections during a conversation with someone who she thought would hire her PR company.

Sophie, Countess Of Wessex, Prince Edward Received Royal Family’s Forgiveness Years Ago

While speaking with Express, Kinsey Schofield said that after many years, the Queen and the royal family managed to forgive Sophie for her misconduct. And she was welcomed back into the royal fold with open arms.

“I think that Sophie and Edward are a great example of forgiveness within the Royal Family. They attempted to half in half out — Sophie wanted to continue with her PR firm and Edward wanted to be a producer, he wanted to produce content. And when they kind of got in trouble for mixing that royal element in with their day-to-day monetized businesses and they were humiliated — the Royal Family allowed them to come back in,” she said.

Prince Edward, Sophie Countess Of Wessex Have Been Supporting Queen Elizabeth, The Royal Family

Schofield also said that Prince Edward and Sophie are two of the most important faces in the royal family right now. After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal duties and after Prince Andrew was banned from performing his royal tasks, the couple stepped up to the plate.

“They are two of the most important faces in the Royal Family right now, that tells you that forgiveness is there and forgiveness is possible, not only within the family but within the world. Now, these are two of the strongest faces within the Royal Family and within the brand itself. That’s decades ago by now. I mean it was forever ago that the Sophie scandal happened when a reporter recorded her talking about her royal contacts during a business meeting,” the source said.

Sophie, Countess Of Wessex, Involved In A PR Scandal

In 2001, Mazher Mahmoud lured Sophie to discuss a potential PR contract with her company. But what the mom of two didn’t know is that their conversation was secretly recorded, and there was no contract in the first place.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, could be heard saying that if Mahmoud’s contacts found out that he’s working with Sophie’s PR company, they would be thrilled because of her royal connections.

Following the scandal, Sophie decided to step down from her position. She also released a statement saying that she regrets her misjudgment of the situation.

“I am deeply distressed by the carrying out of an entrapment operation on me and my business but I also much regret my own misjudgment in succumbing to that subterfuge. This has been a difficult time for me. I take very seriously the issues raised and, naturally, regret any embarrassment above all to the Queen,” she said.

Meanwhile, royal expert Ingrid Seward described Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, as a low-key couple who has become a permanent fixture within the royal family. After all, they were also the first two to speak up after Prince Philip’s death. And they have never left the Queen’s side since then.

“The Queen is very canny. And she has always been very fond of Sophie. Prince Philip adored Sophie, and the Queen feels that now is the moment to push her, just gently. ‘Give some interviews, do some stuff. You work very hard, no one takes any notice. Get out there.’ I can see her saying that. It’s what Prince Philip would have wanted, and now he is gone, doing what he would have wanted keeps his memory alive. I think he would have really liked Edward and Sophie to be a bit more high profile,” Seward told The Times.

The royal expert added that Prince Philip also adored his daughter-in-law. After all, Sophie knew how to handle the late royal.
