While the Sonic the Hedgehog film featured the legendary blue hedgehog, one fan-favorite character was missing from the film and viewers can't help but wonder why the red echidna didn't join Sonic in his epic adventures.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, director Jeff Fowler explains why Knuckles wasn't in the movie. "For this first film, we really were just looking at the 1991 game and just see where it all started and just keep it simple," he said. "Just really try to nail Sonic and Robotnik and just set up their rivalry."

Fowler says while there are a lot of great characters in the Sonic universe, he thinks that the most important thing is to set up the blue hedgehog first. To show his relationship with Doctor Robotnik and to explore more of his origin story that'll make everyone "fall in love with him as a character" and possibly, so they could even root for more.

"And then, if all that goes well, then we can kind of open it up and bring in some of these other characters that fans know and love," the director continued. He points out that "no one's more excited" that him to have that kind of opportunity.

Following the character's redesign, there's no doubt that Sonic the Hedgehog did well at the box office. The movie is seemingly set up for a sequel, and it looks like Fowler plans to share more of Sonic's adventures with his friends soon.
