Films usually take more than three months before they get their digital release. Though it does not exactly pinpoint the box office failure or success of the film, the most common reason to transfer to a different platform is to provide more sales for the chosen streaming site. In this case, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is getting an earlier digital release date due to the sequel’s negative reception.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has only begun showing exclusively in cinemas, and yet it seems the sequel has a low chance of prolonging its theatrical premiere.

Superhero films, whether from Marvel Studios or DC Studios, have not been well-received so far this 2023. Although this doesn’t fully imply that the future of the genre could easily vanish soon, this will most likely affect the ongoing plans of both franchises in terms of improving their quality in doubling their effort to produce better-quality films for cinema-goers to watch.

Despite its poor performance at the box office, a number of Shazam! 2 stars have responded, including Rachel Zegler (who played Anthea) who took her sentiments to Twitter by saying: “[H]ey our film is actually really good! [...] some people out there [are] just being… senselessly mean.”

Meanwhile, the director David F. Sandberg took this as a sign to transfer in directing horror movies to take a break from superhero movies for a while.

In comparison to the previously released films under DC Studios, Shazam! Fury of the Gods had merely earned $30.5 million at the box office on its domestic opening weekend, which is lower than what Shazam! ($53.5M) and Black Adam ($67M) opened in 2019 to 2022. For now, Shazam! 2 has grossed $65.5 million globally.

In the meantime, you can watch Shazam! Fury of the Gods available in cinemas worldwide.
