Shazam! 2 Director Drives Away From Superhero Movies After Negative Reception

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not doing good in the theaters at all. Like recent superhero films such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the Shazam! sequel has only managed to garner mixed reactions from its audience scores. Shazam! franchise director David F. Sandberg had addressed the harsh reception on the sequel by posting a thread on his Twitter account.

“On Rotten Tomatoes, I just got my lowest critic score and my highest audience score on the same film,” Sandberg wrote, “I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically, but I was still a little surprised, because I think it’s a good film. Oh, well.”

“As I’ve been saying for a while now, I’m very eager to go back to horror (as well as trying [out] some new things). After six years of Shazam, I’m definitely done with superheroes for now.” Sandberg added a clarification that despite the negative reception, he has learned so much on directing the two films, “Just to be clear, I don’t regret even for a second making the Shazam movies.”

Apart from Sandberg’s newfound direction in his career, he went on to conclude his thread by saying: “One thing I’ve been really looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online. A lot of that stresses me out so much and it will be nice not having to think about that anymore.”

Sandberg did previously admit he doesn’t see the Shazam thriving for long in the DCU. he had doubted that Gunn had thought on keeping Zachary Levi’s hero in the long-run.

With Sandberg now yearning to make horror films, instead, there’s no telling on whether he would still be up to direct a potential Shazam 3 or DC Studios won’t plan on prolonging the franchise at all.

In the meantime, Sandberg’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now available in cinemas worldwide!
