Shazam 2 Director Reveals Original Plan for Mid-Credit Scene

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Typical moviegoers usually leave once the credits roll, but superhero fans are trained to look for cameos or wait for the mid- or post-credit scenes, given that they usually hint at the future of their favorite superheroes. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is playing now in theaters, and director David F. Sandberg revealed some intriguing details about the movie's mid-credits stinger, sharing that different DC Comics characters were supposedly going to appear, not the ones the fans have seen in the finished film.

In the scene, A.R.G.U.S. agents John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) approach Shazam. They invite him to join the Justice Society, to which he agrees, after initially expecting them to say Justice League. When questioned why he chose these specific characters for the sequence, Sandberg said that it was originally supposed to involve Justice Society members before everything "fell apart."

“They were supposed to be Justice Society members but when that fell apart at the last minute we had to improvise. This happened way before Gunn became the boss. I know a lot of people think it was his idea but it wasn’t. I’m happy we could use his characters since I love Peacemaker.” the director replied to a fan on Twitter.

Black Adam (2022) introduced the DCU's Justice Society of America, which included Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). Appearing in comics two decades before the Justice League did, the JSA is tasked by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), the head of A.R.G.U.S., to catch Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) after he is released from a 5,000-year exile. Eventually, the JSA and Black Adam join forces to stop the evil Sabbac from taking over the world, a battle in which one JSA member is killed.

With the DCU en route to revamping under James Gunn and Peter Safran, Black Adam, JSA, and Shazam’s futures in the franchise are left uncertain, although fans can expect that they might still see Waller and the cast of Peacemaker as the DCU goes along. When Gunn announced their initial DC slate, Davis is set to reprise her role as A.R.G.U.S. boss in an upcoming series, while Peacemaker has been renewed for a second season and has yet to receive its official release window.

For now, fans can watch Shazam! Fury of the Gods in worldwide theaters.
