Several weeks ago, DC fans were delighted when they heard that the release date of Shazam! Fury of the Gods moved to December this year instead of summer next year as it means that their wait for the highly-anticipated sequel has gone shorter. Now, it looks like you might have to adjust your calendar again as there is a change again in its release date.

According to Deadline, Shazam! Fury of the Gods has moved its release date to December 21 this year instead of the previous December 16 date where it would have competed against Avatar: The Way of Water. With its new date, the film is now going to be against titles such as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody.

The move was made in response to Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau's confirmation during the Disney presentation at CinemaCon that the film is sticking with its December 16 date. The new date would allow the DC film to avoid competing directly against the sequel of the highest-grossing film of all time.

After the announcement was made, Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg joked on Twitter by telling Avatar director James Cameron, "You're welcome," for their move. Then, he suggested that he should do the 4K release of The Abyss as his way of "thanking" him.

It's not surprising to hear that they adjusted the release date for a few days since it is inevitable that Avatar: The Way of Water will be a bigger hit given how the first film was a huge box office success and is still the highest-grossing film of all time to this day. However, even though they moved the release date, they're still going to be competing since they will be in theaters around the same time.

It will be interesting to see what the box office numbers will look like for both of them once they get released. Fortunately, they are both in the holiday season which is considered the most crowded time for moviegoing so it is highly likely that they will both do well despite being in competition.
