There is finally some news on Seth Rogen's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Originally slated for August 11, 2023, the movie has now been given a new release date, which means that it will be entering our lives a little sooner than we originally thought. But when will we be seeing it in theaters?

Seth Rogen is probably the last person you'd associate with a property like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but his take on the sewer-dwelling, pizza-munching, anthropomorphic reptiles will apparently be teenage-focused.

In an interview with Collider last year, Rogen talked about the project, saying:

"As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the 'Teenage' part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most. And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who's made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us. I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as kind of a jumping-off point for the film."

Now, the movie has been given a new release date. Originally set for August 11, 2023, Paramount Pictures has confirmed that it will be releasing a week earlier, on August 4. This comes from Erik Davies of Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes, who revealed the new dates via Twitter, along with a number of other major Paramount blockbusters.

The upcoming reboot is also said to be CGI, but it's unclear as to whether this means that it will be CG in its entirety like TMNT (2007), or that the Turtles will be CG, just like in the Michael Bay-produced reboots that were released in 2014 and 2016. Either way, with Rogen on board, it sounds like it might just be the most comedy-centric one yet.

Seth Rogen's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot will be the seventh theatrical movie in the franchise. The franchise so far has included:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)
  • TMNT (2007)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)

Exactly how the new reboot will pan out, though, remains to be seen, but Rogen's focus on the teenage aspect begs to question whether it will be comparable to other movies throughout Rogen's career, such as Pineapple Express (2008).

However, the 2023 reboot isn't the only one in the works - last year, it was confirmed that SNL writer Colin Jost will be penning a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, with his brother Casey Jost.

It's unknown whether or not this will be the third entry in the Michael Bay series, but seeing as the box office reception for 2016's Out of the Shadows wasn't great, this is unlikely. Either way, Michael Bay is reported to be back on board.
