Sarah Michelle Gellar is done doing Buffy the Vampire Slayer but still wishes the show to succeed if it ever continues.
Gellar played the role of Buffy for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003. With its success, receiving critical and popular acclaim and more, many are looking forward to its other iterations, but it looks like those may never feature its original female lead anymore.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is No Longer Interested in Reprising Role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
In an interview with SFX Magazine via CBR, the 45-year-old revealed that she’s no longer interested in reprising her role as Buffy if the franchise ever gets rebooted.
Even before it was adapted into a movie and eventually flopped, she didn’t want to play the role.
“I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn't need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story because there's the story of female empowerment,” she explained.
“I love the way the show was left: 'Every girl who has the power can have the power.' It's set up perfectly for someone else to have the power,” she continued. “But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
The Legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The franchise began as a feature film in 1992, with Kristy Swanson as Buffy Summers. However, the role perfectly fit Gellar more, and she started making its TV adaptation in 1997.
It ran for seven seasons, equating to six years. It originally aired on The WB and moved to UPF for its final two seasons.

It then had a spinoff, Angel, starred by the series’ male lead David Boreanaz that ran for five seasons, from 1999 to 2004.
Since then, Buffy the Vampire Slayer hasn’t received any reboot or continuation. However, its story continues in comic books, continuing Buffy’s story and other spinoffs that focus on different characters and concepts.
In 2018, there were reports that a reboot would happen, led by the creator Joss Whedon as its executive producer and Monica Owusu-Breen as its scriptwriter.

However, according to reports, the project has been canned indefinitely.
