Sam Raimi Discloses Why He Won't Direct Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4

The last two installments of MCU's Phase 4 are undoubtedly one of Marvel Studios' finest as the franchise continues to explore the Multiverse. Director Sam Raimi returned to his superhero roots with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featuring jaw-dropping crossovers, while Jon Watts' Spider-Man: No Way Home marks the momentous three-generation reunion of three Peter Parkers including Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.

Speaking of Spider-Man, Sam Raimi is closely tied to the franchise as he is the first-ever director to helm the web-slinger featuring Tobey Maguire. And now that Maguire and Raimi are back in the mega-franchise, of course, fans are anticipating a reunion.

While Tom Holland is confirmed to reprise his role as the friendly neighborhood in Spider-Man 4, there were online demands asking Raimi to return and helm another installment of the web-slinging hero. And recently, Raimi offered a hilarious yet authentic response on why he can't helm Holland's Spider-Man 4.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi opens up with Tom Holland's MCU Spider-Man trilogy.

Raimi first praised No Way Home and calls it "a complete audience thrill ride" and how it's compelling to see another version of the comic book character that he started. However, Raimi admitted that he won't do Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 without reuniting with Tobey Maguire first.

Raimi explained, “I loved No Way Home. I thought it was a complete audience thrill ride. The crowd I was with were ooh-ing and ahh-ing, and it had a great heart to it. It was great seeing my old friends again. I love Spider-Man. And I love Tom Holland in the role. [But] if I made a Spider-Man movie, it would probably have to be with Tobey or he’d break my neck.”

Aside from the online petitions for Holland and Raimi's team up for Spider-Man 4, it appears that fans would rather love to see Raimi and Maguire reunite in a Spider-Man-related project, or of course, a Maguire's Spider-Man 4. Although no one would complain once Maguire officially returns to the franchise and wear the blue and red Spidey getup again, Marvel Studios hasn’t yet announced anything regarding Maguire’s MCU future.

After No Way Home brought back three Peter Parkers that every Marvel fan never thought would happen on the big screens, the fate of Holland, Garfield, and Tobey’s Spider-Mans are now very wide open, and it's just up to the Marvel writers how they will continue each separate Peter Parker’s arc.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now showing in theaters worldwide and Spider-Man: No Way Home is available for digital purchase.
