Rob Marshall Teases Possibility of Making The Little Mermaid Sequels and Prequels

The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid remake movie is about to hit the big screen in over a month. But as early as now, director Rob Marshall teased the possibility of making sequels and prequels.

Disney has been known for creating multiple direct-to-video follow-ups to their hit movies. Hence, with The Little Mermaid's foreseen success, future sequels and prequels may be coming.

The Possibility of The Little Mermaid Prequels and Sequels

The upcoming Halley Bailey-starrer movie will see the reinvention of the 1989 Disney animated classic, fit for the new generation.

In the 2000s, the original film also got a sequel and a prequel: the 2000's The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and the 2008's The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning.

So, will the live-action remake follow suit?

In an interview with Total Film magazine, via Games Radar, Marshall discussed how a prequel or a sequel would be possible.

He said,

“I know there have been the prequels and sequels to the animated film – like, the straight-to-video kind of things, you know? It’s a classic story that has a lot of characters and a lot of interesting stories. I do think it’s right for certain things.”

However, they must still see how The Little Mermaid's live-action will work out.

The filmmaker added,

“But you have to see how a movie plays and how it does… I think there’s always opportunity to find stories within stories. That’s always a wonderful thing.”

“I’m glad we were able to take this one to live-action because it really is a very powerful tale and very emotional.”

The Possible Stories for The Little Mermaid Live-Action Prequels and Sequels

The Little Mermaid II tells the story of Ariel and Eric's life 12 years after the original movie.

Alternatively, The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning sees the young princess challenging King Triton's new law.

Though Disney has already laid the groundwork for the possible The Little Mermaid live-action prequels and sequels, Marshall may create new stories like what Disney did with The Lion King remake, per Screenrant.

The 2019 photorealistic computer-animated remake was faithful to the original 1994 animated movie. However, its upcoming prequel/sequel movie would change its course from The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. 

Instead, director Barry Jenkins will feature the story of a young Mufasa and his brother, Scar, through flashbacks, just like The Godfather Part II.
