Rings of Power Star Discusses Playing LOTR's First Female POC Dwarf

There is little doubt that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power featured a diverse cast and although this led to mixed reactions, it was amazing to see major milestones for J.R.R. Tolkien's Universe. One of the coolest characters we met in the first season was Princess Disa, the wife of Durin IV and princess of the Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm.

Princess Disa was an interesting character considering she was the first female Dwarf we meet in the series and she also played an important role in The Rings of Power. Moreover, she was played by POC actor Sophia Nomvete, who admits her casting was a huge milestone for The Lord of the Rings.

“This is a moment for history and a moment for so many people that will, I hope, stand the test of time. It was something that was so important to the show, I think, and so important to Tolkien,” Nomvete told Deadline. “I feel like the mere host of this incredible creation, but so honored and so proud to be able to fly the flag for this moment because she is a force to be reckoned with and a dwarf at heart.”

Nomvete also pointed out that Princess Disa's characterization was important to her as an actor.

“She has that gregarious nature. She’s strong. But I know how important it is for the world. I know how important it is for the world of fantasy and for the world of the walking Tolkien to see the first dwarf princess, and to be a part of that as a mother, as a woman,” she said.

So what can we expect in The Rings of Power Season 2? Nomvete confirmed that things are “going beautifully” despite a recent setback.

“I cannot tell you how excited I am. Because there’s just more of everything. Season 1 was this glorious introduction. We want to know, the world, the culture, how are we bringing this amazing story and this infrastructure to life. And that’s what we see, the peaceful phase, the introductory phase,” she said.

The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is currently in production.
