You can now explore the best of Kyoto, thanks to an uber-talented Reddit user who set out to recreate the popular Japan capital using Unreal Engine 4 for a unique atmospheric exploration game.
Created by artist named cavesrd, the game allows you to explore the Japanese shrine called Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of the most important and popular destinations in the city that boasts thousands of vermilion torii gates. The creator says the "detailed, realistically designed" environment was based on photos and his own memories.
"I feel like the real place has a very culturally unique significance, I personally had a great time exploring it a few years ago. I've designed this environment to be experienced from a first person perspective, with the aim of allowing the player to be immersed in the same kind of atmosphere as the real place," the Reddit user wrote on his website.
The game has a list of locations that you need to find. Cavesrd also prepared a small ending and some hidden areas that you can stumble upon. The Redditor touts that the map is "very extensive" and will offer a lot to explore incuding shrine gates laid out over the entire mountainside.
"I've tried to include a lot of variance in different parts of the mountain, with lots of points of interest to discover and many branching/intertwining paths to encourage you to make choices with your exploration," he went on to say.
You can also snap photos using the in-game camera and even set the right soundtrack for your journey. Check it out below.
The game can be downloaded on PC for free. You can also purchase the VR version for $4 for a more immersive experience and future upgrades that include locomotion walking and a physical in-game camera in this version.
