King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla have been happily married for the past 17 years and counting. Even though their relationship can be described as tumultuous, the pair managed to prove to everyone that they are perfect for each other.

But according to reports, if the Queen Mother was still alive, King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla wouldn't have been allowed to tie the knot because she disapproved of the latter.

Queen Mother Reportedly Had A Discussion With King Charles About Queen Consort Camilla, Princess Diana

In the book The Queen Mother, royal author Tom Quinn revealed that the Queen Mother wanted King Charles to figure out a way how he could keep both his relationships with Princess Diana and Queen Consort Camilla years ago.

"The Queen Mother discussed the whole Camilla business with Charles, and she couldn't really understand why Charles couldn't have a mistress and somehow find an accommodation with his wife that would mean they didn't have to get divorced," he said (via Cheat Sheet).

Queen Mother Did Not Want King Charles To Divorce Princess Diana, Royal Author Claimed

Quinn revealed that King Charles and Princess Diana were introduced to each other by their grandparents. The Queen Mother was good friends with Princess Diana's grandmother, Lady Fermoy.

"Diana's grandmother, Lady Fermoy, was a great friend of the Queen Mother's. They were a similar sort of generation, and they cooked it up between them," Quinn said.

But it didn't take long before the Queen Mother noticed some cracks in King Charles and Princess Diana's marriage. Even if this was the case, she still encouraged her grandson not to file for divorce and instead find a compromise with his then-wife.

Royal author Christopher Andersen echoed Quinn's revelations about the Queen Mother in his article for Vanity Fair. He said that the Queen Mother disapproved of Queen Consort Camilla.

"[The] beloved Queen Mum disliked Diana, but she reportedly disapproved of Camilla even more. And while the Queen had resigned herself following Diana's death to an eventual marriage between Charles and Camilla, she reportedly pledged not to sanction it so long as her mother was alive," he wrote.

King Charles Waited 3 Years After Queen Mother's Death To Marry Queen Consort Camilla

The Queen Mother passed away in 2002, but King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla decided to wait three more years before they finally tied the knot.

According to royal biographer Penny Junor, the royal couple decided to wait a bit longer for the sake of Prince William and Prince Harry.

"A not insignificant part of the reason why they had waited until 2005 to announce their engagement was a sensitivity towards the boys. They didn't want to foist a stepmother on William and Harry before they had fully grown up. Although they have been genuinely pleased to see him so happy, and genuinely like Camilla – and her children – the issue is complicated. The notion that their mother was a sacrificial extra in a long-standing love story between Charles and Camilla – a line most of the newspapers ran after their engagement – is hurtful...," he said (via Express).
