The British royal family celebrated their first Christmas and New Year's Day without the Queen. Her Majesty passed away on Sept. 8.

When she was alive, she had a New Year's Eve tradition — to stay up late until 12 a.m. with the other members of the royal family. Nobody goes to bed before the Queen, so they are forced to stay with her.

"Nobody felt it right to go to bed before the queen did," Sir William Heseltine, former private secretary to the Queen, wrote in his personal memoir, The Royals in Australia (via Independent).

Not everyone reportedly enjoyed the Queen's New Year's Eve tradition. According to Heseltine, Prince William and Prince Harry's mom, the late Princess Diana, wasn't a fan of the said tradition.

"For Diana, the long royal evenings were agony," he said in a throwback interview, Express reported.

"There'd be an hour or so in the sitting room of everyone sitting around making conversation and nobody felt it right to go to bed before the Queen did. Diana was driven to such extremes that she'd excuse herself and go to bed, which was thought to be rather bad form, going to bed before the Queen."

Aside from the Queen's tradition, the late Princess of Wales reportedly felt like she was in tight quarters whenever she was in Sandringham for the holidays.

What Did The Queen Do To Keep Herself, Royals Stay Up Late On New Year's Eve?

Her Majesty passed the time until midnight on New Year's Eve by reportedly playing games. In Netflix's The Crown, they depicted it as Ibble-Dibble with fast talking and burnt corks, but royal expert Brian Hoey, author of At Home with the Queen, said King Charles' mom rang in the New Year with a game of "Lucky Dip."

Unlike Ibble-Dibble, it's not supposed to be a drinking game. Rather, it involves a footman supplying a sawdust-filled tub complete with notes that have predictions about them for the new year.
