While the Xbox Series X has the power of Backwards Compatibility on its side, Sony is doubling down with the PlayStation 5's attempt to ‘move forward' with the next generation of gaming. That being said, the PS5 will still be able to connect with some PS4 devices, even the DualShock 4 controller.

The PlayStation Blog had put down this list of PS4 accessories/peripherals that can work on the PS5:

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

That being said, there is still a need to get PS5 controllers will still be necessary to play PS5 games. When it comes to the DualShock 4 being used on next-gen titles, the blog writes, "No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we're bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

For now, the contest for the next-gen console is still being very hotly debated. Though Xbox did lose with the current-gen, they are turning a lot of heads with the promise to not invalidate the previous generation of games. So far, the PlayStation 5 only looks to be prioritizing PS4 backward compatibility, and not anything else before that

We're not completely sure about the PS5's abilities yet, but hopefully, we'll get a better look when the PlayStation's State of Play comes out this Aug. 6. Hopefully, by then we'll also get the release date for the console.
