Queen Elizabeth served the monarch for seven decades and was loved by the world. However, her late daughter-in-law, Princess Diana's funeral received higher TV ratings in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Queen Elizabeth Vs. Princess Diana Funeral TV Ratings

Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana were two of the most important women in Prince William and Prince Harry's lives and in King Charles' at one point. Both were very popular, which prompted some to compare the TV ratings during their funerals.

The late British monarch received a state funeral Monday. The service was watched by millions of people in the world. But more watched Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

According to the figures from Nielsen, 11.4 million viewers watched Queen Elizabeth's state funeral in the U.S. It was pale in comparison compared to the 33.2 million people who watched Princess Diana's burial over two decades ago, TMZ reported.

The figure was closer in Britain — about 27 million British people watched the monarch's final send-off, just five million less than the 32 million who tuned in for the late Princess of Wales.

However, the figures reported by Nielsen didn't really represent the total number of viewers who watched Her Majesty's funeral for several reasons you will find in the next section.

Is Comparing Princess Diana And Queen Elizabeth II's Funeral Ratings Reasonable?

The outlet noted that the comparison of the funeral ratings of King Charles' mother and ex-wife is unreasonable. It was likened to oranges and apples.

First, the Queen's procession was being live streamed across various digital platforms, and those numbers do not count in the Nielsen ratings. It's likely that the Queen's funeral ratings had more viewers than what Nielsen reported if the sum from various platforms was recorded.

Second, the outlet noted that it is "unfair to compare just about ANY TV program today to one from 25 years ago."

"The advent of streaming services has dramatically lowered TV ratings for even the biggest shows," the report added.

Third, the two women died at different stages of their lives. Prince William and Prince Harry's mom passed away in a tragic car crash while she was in the prime of her life. She was only 36 years old when she died.

Queen Elizabeth just celebrated her 70th anniversary as the British monarch. She was 96.
