The Duke of Cornwall is traditionally held by the eldest son of the reigning British monarch, with his wife taking the Duchess title. When Queen Elizabeth was still alive, Prince Charles held the title with his wife, Camilla, known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

Prince William and Middleton, both 40, have been known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Queen bestowed them the dukedom title when they wed in April 2011.

The royal couple is also expected to inherit the titles Prince and Princess of Wales. King Charles held the title until the Queen's death Thursday. He also previously held the titles Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay, which were used in Scotland.

More About Prince William's New Title Prince Of Wales

The title Prince of Wales is typically given to the male heir apparent. King Edward VIII held the title before ascending to the throne and within months before abdicating.

However, the title Prince of Wales is something that is not immediately passed to the heir apparent following his grandmother's death. The sovereign, King Charles III, received the title himself when he was 9 years old from his mother, Queen Elizabeth.
